Like Mitt did at first, he terrifies Hildy and Ynen. He is marvellous as a character, complicated as a person. The narrator does a fine job of differentiating between the characters, without feeling obliged to do the drama school audition thing. I usually try to obscure them, but I really wanted to talk about some of the juicy content in the later parts of the book.

Mitt grows up a sailor and later a gunsmith’s apprentice, and plots to gain revenge on both the Free Holanders for betraying his father and on Earl Hadd for pretty much everything by killing the Earl and implicating the Free Holanders.
