Writing before monasticism became the dominant paradigm of Christian asceticism, Irenaeus and Clement afford fascinating glimpses of alternative approaches. For Irenaeus, asceticism is the expression of man living the life of God in anr dimensions of the body, that which is most characteristically human and in the image of God. Human existence as a physical being includes sexuality as a permanent part of the framework within which males and females grow towards God.

In contrast, Clement irenaues asceticism as man’s attempt at a godlike life to protect the rational element, that which is distinctively human and in the image of God, from any possible disturbance and threat, or from the vulnerability of dependency, especially of a physical or sexual nature. Here human sexuality is strictly limited by the finality of procreation and abandoned in the resurrection. By paying careful attention to these two writers, Behr offers challenging material for the continuing task of understanding ourselves as human beings.

Irenaeus has a healthy view of the human body, even seeing it as the anthropolovy of the image and likeness of Xnd. However, Clement holds to a suspicion of the body locating the image in the intellect.

Clement moreover sees human salvation as paideia, with Christ as the great Teacher. On the other hand, Irenaeus sees the Incarnation as asxeticism restoration of the image. Sociobiology: The New Synthesis – Wikipedia

When Sociobiology was published inour reviewer, John Pfeiffer, hailed it as ‘an evolutionary event. This shortened version, retaining all of Sarah Landry’s illuminating drawings, makes it more accessible to general readers. Like most great books, Sociobiology is unpedantic, lucid, and eminently accessible.

If you have this book Wilson’s plain uncluttered prose is a treat to read, his logic is rigorous, his silson are lucid.

Wymne-Edwards Nature This book will stand as a landmark in the comparative study of social behavior. Quarterly Review of Biology Sociobiology is an excellent book, full of extraordinary insights, and replete with the beauty and poetry of the animal kingdom. Times Literary Supplement It is impossible to leave Wilson’s book without having one’s sense of life permanently and dramatically widened. In this abridged edition, Edward O. Wilson trims his monumental work to its essential argument and most compelling examples.

He retains the full basic structure of the original book, while eliminating the technical discussions and data summaries. Because of the unusual amount of interest and commentary it has generated, the final chapter on human social behavior remains spciobiologia intact.

New students and general readers can sociobiologoa for themselves what sociobiology is all about and why there is sofiobiologia much furor surrounding it.

Die Biologie des menschlichen Verhaltens. The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating.

Why Women Have Sex: Ver todas las apps de lectura gratuitas de Kindle. Empieza a leer Sociobiology: Detalles del producto Tapa blanda: This book is, to my mind, the most important single book on social behavior in animals and humans, edging out Darwin’s The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animalsas well as Maynard Smith’s Evolution and the Theory of Games Only 30 of the book’s pages are devoted to Homo sapiens, but this is the part I am interested in, and the part I will discuss in this review.

I recently reread Wilson’s Sociobiology because I had only a vague memory of what exactly he said about human sociobiology, but numerous writers alluded to the crudeness and inaccuracy of Wilson’s analysis. It is well known that Wilson’s sociobiology of our species was bitterly critiqued by liberals and Marxists for its “reductionism,” and “biological determinism.

To my surprise, upon rereading I found this charge to be quite without merit. We may know much more about human sociobiology today than a third of a century ago, but Wilson’s general exposition is virtually flawless.

Sigue al autor

Wilson’s central point is that human genetic development has created a species that enjoys a plasticity of social organization orders of magnitude more flexible than that of other species.

Human genes, so to speak, eociobiologia us for a panorama of cultural life-worlds. Reductionist this is not.

Genetic determinist this is not. Wilson speculates that genes promoting flexibility in social behavior are strongly selected on the individual level, but he follows Darwin in speculating that group selection may have been important in making us who we are.

Of course, Wilson decisively rejects the “tabula rasa” view that the human mind can be successfully indoctrinated into any arbitrary cultural system the devout wish of the social engineers of the political left and right. Moderately sociobiolohia heritability has been documented in introversion-extroversion measures Wilson describes two widely disparate methods of anthropological genetics.

The first uses laboratory experiments to identify the individual units of human behavior, for instance Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and George Homans’ behavioral sociobioligia theory.

The second is phylogenetic analysis, in which we compare and sociogiologia humans with other related species. Wilson is rightly skeptical of this body sociobiolobia research, preferring socjobiologia derive genetic predispositions by libbro “the lowest taxonomic level at which each character shows significant intertaxon variation.

Wilson attributes this idea to Campbelland discusses the possibility that group selection is involved in this sophisticated aspect of human psychology. This, of course, has become a major theme in contemporary sociobiology. Today we would say simply that human ethics is a central aspect of human evolution, and that morality is the product of a gene-culture coevolutionary dynamic that must be studied in a purely scientific manner.

Wilson clearly understands that human culture sets the stage for human genetic evolution just as much wilsin the converse. In sum, I could find no hint of the reductionism and biological determinism that critiques have charged permeates Wilson’s treatment of human sociality. Rather, I find a sophisticated and nuanced analysis that includes most of the theoretical tools that were to be developed over the succeeding four decades.

Wilson’s judgment here is deeply moderate and considered, leading me to believe that his bitter critics simply recoiled at the reasonable suggestion that there are biological foundations to human behavior and morality, and hence limits to the extent that humans can be indoctrinated into extreme anti-humanistic ideologies.

Sociobiology: The New Synthesis

The true enemies of human freedom are those who yearn for a system of totalizing culture that is capable of eliminating individual will and reducing people to cogsS in an immense social machine. Probably such enemies of freedom cannot succeed in the long run, but they certainly have the capacity to ruin the lives of millions in the attempt.

Attending a class with E O Wilson using this book would have been a blast. The quality of this monumental tome was everything I had ever read about it. The technical bases of sociobiolpgia presented is beyond any technical treatise I have ever read.

What Joseph Campbell is to theology and myths, Edward O. Wilson is socobiologia social issues and the biology of societies. I acquired this work some time ago and finally over the past 14 months I managed to complete it. This is more than a text it is an assurance that great minds have come to our attention and should never be ignored.

Sociobiology is a massive work that helps us all to appreciate the social values and of “All God’s Creatures. This book is as revolutionary today as it was when first published in It is amazing that Wilson, for the second edition did not change any of the original text. He just extended it.

I was surprised to learn that some people, primarily in the southern hemisphere, can have a brain size even smaller than homo erectus. Llbro you consider that gorillas have flat noses and black skin, It is a good example of evolution.

An animal behavior society named it the best book on animal behavior ever written. Gana dinero con nosotros. Todos los derechos reservados. Amazon Music Transmite millones de wilskn.

The writing is absolutely mesmerizing, both characters’ voices are so authentic and believable, their personalities and thoughts expressed so finely, like watching the intricacies of lace. The plot ,of course, is clever and surprizing.

For once, a real “page turner”. And I am still thinking about all the other levels and layers of the book: Will probably read it again soon just to enjoy the writing style in itself! In spite of the world-wide success that this novel has known, it left me somewhat disappointed. But it is readable. I wasn’t convinced by the heroine’s motivation for her disappearance and she certainly wasn’t a heroine I could relate to.

Nor did I care all that much about any other character. I don’t understand why this novel, among all those out there, should be els one to be so globally successful.

P5: Guidelines for Electronic Text Encoding and Interchange

This chapter addresses the problems of describing an encoded work so that the text itself, its source, its encoding, and its revisions are all thoroughly documented. Such documentation is equally necessary for scholars using the texts, for software processing them, and for cataloguers in libraries and archives. Together these descriptions and declarations provide an electronic analogue to the title page attached to a printed work.

They also constitute an equivalent for the content of the code books or introductory manuals customarily accompanying electronic data sets. A TEI header can be a very large and complex object, or it may be a very simple one. Some application areas for example, the construction of language corpora and the transcription of spoken texts may require more specialized and detailed information than others. The present proposals therefore define both a core set of elements all of which may be used without formality in any TEI header and some additional elements which become available within the header as the result of including additional specialized modules within the schema.

When the module for language corpora described in chapter 15 Language Corpora is in use, for example, several additional elements are available, as further detailed in that chapter.

The next section of the present chapter briefly introduces the overall structure of the header and the kinds of data it may contain. This is followed by a detailed description of all the constituent elements which may be used in the core header. The teiHeader element should be clearly distinguished from the front matter of the text itself for which see section 4.

A composite text, such as a corpus or collection, may contain several headers, as further discussed below.

In the usual case, however, a TEI-conformant text will contain a single teiHeader element, followed by a single text element. The TEI Header provides a very rich collection of metadata categories, but makes no claim to be exhaustive. It is certainly the case that individual projects may wish to record specialised metadata which either does not fit within one of the predefined categories identified by the TEI Header or requires a more specialized element structure than is proposed here.

To overcome this problem, the encoder may elect to define additional elements using the customization methods discussed in The TEI class system makes such customizations simpler to effect and easier to use in interchange.

This section describes the fileDesc element, which is the first component of the teiHeader element. The bibliographic description of a machine-readable or digital text resembles in structure that of a book, an article, or any other kind of textual object. The file description element of the TEI header has therefore been closely modelled on existing standards in library cataloguing; it should thus provide enough information to allow users to give standard bibliographic references to the electronic text, and to allow cataloguers to catalogue it.

Bibliographic citations occurring elsewhere in the header, and also in the text itself, are derived from the same model on bibliographic citations in general, see further section 3.

See further section 2. The title element contains the chief name of the electronic work, including any alternative title or subtitles it may have. It may be repeated, if the work has hypermedoa than one title perhaps in different languages and takes whatever form is considered appropriate by its creator.

This will distinguish the electronic work from the source text in citations and in catalogues which contain descriptions of both types of material. This name is likely to change frequently, as new copies of the file are made on the computer system. Its form is entirely dependent on the particular computer system in use and thus cannot always easily be transferred from one system to another. Moreover, a given work may be composed of many files.

For these reasons, these Guidelines strongly recommend that such names should not be used as the title for any electronic work. Helpful guidance on the formulation of useful descriptive titles in difficult cases may be found in the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules Gorman and Winkler, chapter 25 or in equivalent national-level bibliographical documentation.

The elements authorsponsorfunderand principalare specializations of the more general respStmt element. These elements are used to provide the statements of responsibility which identify the person s responsible for the intellectual or artistic content of an item and any corporate bodies from which it emanates. Any number of such statements may occur within the title statement. At a minimum, identify the author of the text and where appropriate the creator of the file. If the bibliographic description is for a corpus, identify the creator of the corpus.

Optionally include also names of others involved in the transcription or elaboration of the text, sponsors, and funding agencies. The name of the person responsible for physical data input need not normally be recorded, unless that hyperemdia is also intellectually responsible for some aspect of the creation of the file.

Where the person whose responsibility is to be documented is not an author, sponsor, funding body, or principal researcher, the respStmt element should be used.

hypernedia This has two subcomponents: No specific recommendations are made at this time as to appropriate content for the resp: Names given may be personal names or corporate names. Give all names in the form in which the persons or bodies wish to alllintext publicly cited.

This would usually be the fullest form of the name, including first names. For printed texts, the word edition applies to the set of all the identical copies of an item produced from one master copy and issued by a particular publishing agency or a group of such agencies. A change in the identity of the distributing body or bodies does not normally constitute a change of edition, while a change in the master copy does.

Synonymous terms used in these Guidelines are versionleveland release. The words revision and updateby contrast, are used for minor changes to a file which do not amount to a sllintext edition. The general principle proposed here is that the production of a new edition entails a significant change in the intellectual content of the file, rather than its encoding or appearance. The addition of analytic coding to a text would thus constitute a new edition, while automatic conversion from one coded representation to another would not.

Changes relating to the character code or physical storage details, corrections of misspellings, simple changes in the arrangement of the contents and changes in the output format do not normally constitute a new edition, whereas the addition of new information e.

Clearly, there will always be borderline cases and the matter is somewhat arbitrary. Hypdrmedia simplest rule is: An edition statement is optional for the first release of a al,intext file; it is mandatory for each later release, though this requirement cannot be enforced by the parser. Note that all changes in a file, whether or not they are regarded as constituting a new edition or simply a new revision, should be independently noted in the revision description section of the file header see section 2.

The edition element should contain phrases describing the edition or version, including the word editionversionor equivalent, together with a number allinttext date, or terms indicating difference from other editions such as new editionrevised edition etc. Any dates that occur within the edition statement should be marked with the date element. The n attribute of the hypermeedia element may be used as elsewhere to supply any formal identification such as a version number for the edition.

One or more respStmt elements may also be used to supply statements of responsibility for the edition in question. Hypermediz may refer to individuals or corporate bodies and can indicate functions such as that of a reviser, hyypermedia can name the person or body responsible for the provision of supplementary matter, of appendices, etc.

For further detail on the respStmt element, see section 3. For printed books, information about the carrier, such as the kind of medium used and its size, are of great importance in cataloguing procedures.

The print-oriented rules fuletype bibliographic description of an item’s medium and extent need some re-interpretation when applied to allintet media.

An electronic file exists as a distinct entity quite independently of its carrier and remains the same intellectual object whether it is fioetype on a magnetic tape, a CD-ROM, a set of floppy disks, or as a file on a mainframe computer. Since, moreover, these Guidelines are specifically aimed at facilitating transparent document storage and interchange, any purely machine-dependent information should be irrelevant as far as the file header is concerned.

This is particularly true of information about file-type although library-oriented rules for cataloguing often distinguish two types of computer file: This distinction is quite difficult to draw in some cases, for example, hypermedia or texts with built in search and retrieval software. The use of standard abbreviations for units of quantity is recommended where applicable, here as elsewhere see http: The publisher is the person or institution by whose authority a given edition of the file is made public.

The distributor is the person or institution from whom copies of the text may be obtained. Where a text is not considered formally hypfrmedia, but is nevertheless made available for circulation by some individual or organization, this person or institution is termed the release authority.

Note that the dates, places, etc.

If the text was created at some date other than its date of publication, its date of creation should be given within the profileDesc element, not in the publication statement. Give any other useful dates e. Additional detailed elements may be used for the encoding of names, dates, and addresses, as further described in section 3. The idno may be used to supply any hyprmedia number associated alljntext the item, including both standard numbers such as an ISSN and particular issue numbers.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis LCH is a rare disease involving clonal proliferation of Langerhans cellsabnormal cells deriving from bone marrow and capable of migrating from skin to lymph nodes.

Clinically, its manifestations range from isolated bone lesions to multisystem disease. LCH is part of a group of clinical jistiocitosis called histiocytoseswhich are characterized by an abnormal proliferation of histiocytes an archaic term for activated dendritic cells and macrophages.

These diseases are related to other forms of abnormal proliferation of white blood cellssuch as leukemias and lymphomas. The disease spectrum results from clonal accumulation and proliferation of cells resembling the epidermal dendritic cells called Langerhans cellssometimes called dendritic cell histiocytosis. These cells in combination with lymphocyteseosinophilsand normal histiocytes form typical LCH lesions that can be found in almost any organ.

LCH is clinically divided histiociosis three groups: Unifocal LCH, also called eosinophilic granuloma an older term which is now known to be a misnomeris a slowly progressing disease characterized by an expanding proliferation of Langerhans cells in various bones. It can be a monostotic involving only one bone or polyostotic involving more than one bone disease.

It typically has no extraskeletal hidtiocitosis, but rarely an identical lesion can be found in the skin, lungs, or stomach. When found in the lungs, it should be distinguished from Pulmonary Langerhans cell hystiocytosis—a special category of disease most commonly seen in adult smokers. Seen mostly in children, multifocal unisystem LCH is characterized by fever, bone lesions and diffuse eruptions, usually on the scalp and in the pulmonzr canals.

Peak onset is 2—10 years of age. Multifocal multisystem LCH, also called Letterer-Siwe diseaseis a rapidly progressing disease in which Langerhans Histiocitozis cells proliferate in many tissues.

It is mostly seen in children under age 2, and the prognosis is poor: It is now considered a form of smoking-related interstitial lung disease. Some affected people recover completely after they stop smoking, but others develop long-term complications such as pulmonary histiocifosis and pulmonary hypertension. LCH provokes a non-specific inflammatory responsewhich includes fever, lethargyand weight loss.

Organ histilcitosis can also cause more specific symptoms. The pathogenesis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis LCH is a matter of debate. There are ongoing investigations to determine whether LCH is a reactive non-cancerous or neoplastic cancerous process.

Arguments supporting the reactive nature of LCH include the occurrence of spontaneous remissions, the extensive secretion of multiple cytokines by dendritic cells and bystander-cells a phenomenon known as cytokine storm in the lesional tissue, favorable prognosis and relatively good survival rate in patients without organ dysfunction or risk organ involvement. On the other hand, the infiltration of organs by monoclonal population of pathologic cells, and the successful treatment of subset of disseminated disease using chemotherapeutic regimens are all consistent with a neoplastic process.

Recurrent cytogenetic or genomic abnormalities would also be required to demonstrate convincingly that LCH is a malignancy. Two independent studies have confirmed this finding. Histiovitosis is confirmed histologically by tissue biopsy. Hematoxylin-eosin stain of biopsy slide will show features of Langerhans Cell e. Presence of Birbeck granules on electron microscopy and immuno-cytochemical features e. CD1 positivity are more specific.

Initially routine blood hisiocitosis e. Radiology will show osteolytic bone lesions and damage to the lung. The latter may be evident in chest X-rays with micronodular and interstitial infiltrate in the mid and lower zone of lung, with sparing of the Costophrenic angle or honeycomb appearance in older lesions.

MRI and CT may show infiltration in sella turcica. Assessment of endocrine function and bonemarrow biopsy are also performed when indicated. Guidelines for management of patients up to 18 years with Langerhans cell histiocytosis have been suggested.

histiocirosis Solitary bone lesion may be amenable through excision or limited radiation, dosage of Gy for children, Gy for adults. However systemic diseases often require chemotherapy. Use of systemic steroid is common, singly or adjunct to chemotherapy.

Local steroid cream is applied to skin lesions. Endocrine deficiency often require lifelong supplement e. Chemotherapeutic agents such as alkylating agentsantimetabolitesvinca alkaloids either singly or in combination can lead to complete remission in diffuse disease. Excellent for single-focus disease. LCH usually affects children between 1 and 15 years old, with a peak incidence between 5 and 10 years of age.

Among children under the age of 10, yearly incidence is thought to be 1 in ,; [35] and in adults even rarer, in about 1 inLCH is usually a sporadic and non- hereditary condition but familial clustering has been noted in limited number of cases. In the 10th episode of season 3 of House entitled “Merry Little Christmas”the primary patient is a girl with dwarfism histiocitoxis has a variety of symptoms, who is ultimately diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

Also ihstiocitosis the 5 series of the series Good doctor Dr. Murphy tried to diagnose Langerhans cell histiocytosis in a boy with a previously diagnosed osteosarcoma. Langerhans cell histiocytosis is occasionally misspelled as “Langerhan” or pklmonar cell histiocytosis, even in authoritative textbooks. The name, however, originates back to its discoverer, Paul Langerhans. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
