Matt Wedel on My meteorites: Binocular Astronomy is a great though sometimes with mind-numbing detail introduction of where to look and what one is seeing.
This is where we all start out. I started as a purely recreational asronomy, and stargazing for no more noble purpose than personal aesthetic enjoyment still occupies a lot of time out under the stars.
Crossen describes about interesting objects at some length, weaving in not just their visual appearance but often their astrophysical significance and observational history, including a lot of constellation lore. To be quite honest I do not always want to take the time to set up my telescopes for a quick look at the Moon or some passing comet. Wil Tirion’s interest in astronomy began as a child.
